This paper was made by hand in Kyoto, at Morita Washi, one of the oldest washi houses in Japan. It is not mass produced. Every sheet is slightly different, and unique.
The technique is called Unryu Sunago. During the papermaking process, long unrefined kozo (mulberry) fibers are left visible inside the sheet, creating a cloud-like texture you can see and feel. Real gold and silver leaf fragments are then scattered by hand into the wet fibers, not printed, not coated. Embedded. The result is a paper that carries a quiet shimmer, subtle and honest.
It is thin and semi-translucent, but surprisingly strong. The mulberry fibers give it a durability that machine-made paper cannot replicate.
This paper works beautifully for sumi-e painting, Japanese calligraphy, bookbinding, collage, art journaling, and fine paper crafts. It also makes a striking base for pressed flower work, wrapping precious objects, or simply keeping.

Sourced and hand-carried in a single, limited batch from Kyoto.
