A slender strip of Japanese paper, edged in gold, made by Kyukyodo, Kyoto. Tanzaku have been used for centuries for poetry, calligraphy, and ink painting. Hung during Tanabata, gifted between artists, placed in tokonoma alcoves as quiet decorative objects.
