Gokaun Japanese Ink Stick - Premium Pine Soot Sumi Ink from Kyoto

220.00 NIS

This ink stick comes in a plain wooden box with no decoration. That is intentional. Gokaun is a premium pine soot ink, the kind that serious practitioners keep on their desk and use carefully.

Ink sticks are one of the oldest tools in East Asian art. You grind them slowly against a wet ink stone, and the ink you make is yours — the consistency, the depth, the tone. It is a different relationship with your materials than opening a bottle.

Pine soot produces a ink with a cool, blue-black tone that holds fine detail well. It is used for calligraphy, sumi-e painting, and any work where the quality of the line matters.

This specific stick was sourced from Saiundo-do, a respected art supply shop in Kyoto that has been serving artists and calligraphy practitioners for generations.
